Worthington Cemetery Policies:

New burial plots are available in Ringville and North Cemeteries.  Burials are permitted in Center Cemetery in plots that have already been purchased.  All plots are 10’x 5’x 6′ (10’x 5’x 4′ for green burial) and cost $800.00 for current or previous residents and $1,200.00 for non-residents. Cemetery commissioners for Ringville and North Cemeteries will determine resident vs. non-resident status in consultation with the entire Cemetery Commission. All checks should be made payable to the Town of Worthington. All plots will be sold consecutively, including green burial plots. Green burials require a biodegradable casket or shroud.  One plot can accommodate one casket or one green burial and up to six cremation burials.

A deed to the plot is issued by the Town Clerk at the request of cemetery commissioner.  No plot can be sold back to the Town directly. A plot may be sold by its owner to another individual privately. A copy of a notarized agreement of transfer of the plot must be given to the Town Clerk.

Grave opening/closing fee: $1000.00. The cemetery commissioner will locate and mark the plot. The grave opening will be arranged by the funeral home, in coordination with the cemetery commissioner, and payment will be made to the contractor doing the excavating through the funeral home.

Cremation opening/closing fee is $200.00, payment to be made to the Town of Worthington.  The cemetery commissioner will be responsible for the cremation opening and closing.  The plot owner may choose to open and close the cremation burial and forgo the costs, but the owner must notify the commissioner. The hole must be deep enough to place the top of the container at least 12 inches below ground level and 2 feet away from the headstone.

Markers and stones are purchased, installed, and maintained by the plot owner. Markers are required for all burials.  A flat stone marker is required for cremations burials.

An official Disposition, Removal or Transportation Burial Permit must be given to the cemetery commissioner at the time of burial.

From Nov 15 to May 1 all burials will be at the discretion of the cemetery commissioner due to frost concerns and accessibility.

No trees, bushes, or shrubs may be planted.

Annual and perennial plants may be planted by owner and must be maintained by owner. All plant containers and non-biodegradable items MUST be removed from cemetery by November every year.  The town is responsible for mowing, filling, seeding, leaf removal, and general maintenance of each cemetery. Care of stones and monuments is the responsibility of the plot owner.  The historical cemeteries (Benjamin, Brewster, and Converse) will be mowed or weed whacked before Memorial Day and again in the fall.  For several years the Cemetery Commission has provided repair to some stones that are most in danger of decay or breakage and are at least one hundred years old if there is no longer a responsible owner for those plots.

The town provides one American flag per veteran per year by Memorial Day. Veterans are eligible for burial assistance and should check with the town’s veteransagent for details.
